Piedmontese Categories of Registration and Recordation

The North American Piedmontese Association offers the following divisions for documentation of breeding stock, based on the Piedmontese-specific myostatin gene and levels of blood purity.

• ONLY homozygous (2-copy) Piedmontese may be Registered.

• Heterozygous (1-copy) Piedmontese may be Recorded

FULLBLOOD PIEDMONTESE: (registry certificates issued)

Fullblood Piedmontese registration classification is strictly defined as an animal that is 100% pureblood traceable through registered pedigree to original Italian stock and documented as homozygous (2 copy) for the Piedmontese-specific myostatin allele mutation. In an effort to preserve the Fullblood gene-pool, animals registered in this category must have an un-broken pedigree chain of registered Fullblood ancestors back to documented Italian registered stock (No "up-graded purebred" registration format allowed).

NATURALEAN™ PIEDMONTESE: (registry certificates issued)

Naturalean ™ Piedmontese registration classification is strictly defined as an animal that is documented as homozygous (2 copy) for the Piedmontese-specific myostatin allele mutation. Piedmontese bloodline percentage (example 25%,50%,75%,99% etc) may be included on the pedigree, as well as the percentage of other breed bloodlines represented. Fullblood cattle that cannot meet the requirements for registered pedigree, unverifiable or unregistered parentage, must be classified as Naturalean ™.

NATURALEAN ™ Crossbreeding Record File: (recordation certificates issued)

NAPA recognizes the seedstock breeder's desire to introduce genetic influences into the Piedmontese from other breeds. The Naturalean" category of registry allows breeders great flexibility in their programs, while ensuring that the primary genetic influence from the Piedmontese-specific myostatin allele mutation is not lost.

Seedstock Piedmontese breeders may crossbreed with other breeds to introduce other genetic features or traits, however only animals documented as homozygous (2 copy) for the Piedmontese-specific myostatin allele mutation may be registered.

Seedstock Piedmontese breeders may utilize animals in a crossbreeding program that are documented heterozygous (1 copy) for the Piedmontese-specific myostatin allele mutation which may be recorded in the Naturalean" herd book for the purpose pedigree and EPD development only, their identification number prefix will state "RECORDED".

• Animals with recorded or registered parentage information available shall have the prefix "N" before the registry or recordation number and pedigree information for one or both parents, as available, shall be expressed on the certificate.

• Animals with no pedigree information shall carry the prefix "Nun in their registry or recordation number, to indicate that no verifiable pedigree information is available.

NATURALEAN ™ Crossbreeding Record File: (No certificates issued)

Seedstock Piedmontese breeders may utilize "First Cross" animals in a crossbreeding program that are not documented heterozygous (1 copy) for the Piedmontese-specific myostatin allele mutation which may be recorded in the Piedmontese data file for the purpose of pedigree and EPD development only (no certificates issued).

NAPA only offers the "First Cross" database option for a paper-less record of breeding stock females that have one parent being a NAPA registered Piedmontese, due to the predictable heritability of the Piedmontesespecific myostatin allele mutation from a homozygous (2 copy) parent which results in a heterozygous (1 copy) offspring. No DNA Myostatin or Permanent Record Test will be required, and no warranty of the myostatin or pedigree accuracy of the animal will be implied, and her identification number will identify her as a "First Cross" animal. When "First Cross" females produce offspring, the offspring may then be registered or recorded in the Naturalean" "N" category, bringing forward the breeder's record pedigree as given for the "First Cross" animal, providing the offspring meet the requirements for registry in the Naturalean" "N" category.

NOTE: all bulls - in any category of registry or recordation - must now also have a Permanent Record DNA Test on file before they can produce register-able or recordable offspring.
